How to beat the razor burn blues
Shaving is pretty caustic to our already skin ‘down there.’ In an ideal world you wouldn’t even do it, but alot of us do. So, let’s help beat the yucky razor burn that comes along with it. As a former OBGYN provider, for 11 years, this is what I recommend to my patients to help beat the razor burn blues:
stand in the warm shower for a bit before even starting; the warmth of the water and steam will help the process
exfoliate with a sugar (not salt - trust me) based scrub to the area (preferably one that is low or free from excess chemicals or fragrance - your vagina does not need to smell like strawberries and creams - it just needs to be clean - STOP IT). (this one is fine)
use a new disposable blade each time (THOU SHALL NOT REUSE DIRTY RAZOR ON OUR GENITALS - SAY IT BACK!!!!); and throw it away after using. A dull razor can lead to worsening razor burn symptoms and the normal yeast and bacteria that live on our skin will live and grow on the razor blades. In a warm, humid environment like a shower, re-using this time and time again will just perpetuate more skin issues including boils, folliculitis and infections down there (maybe these?)
Use a gentle shaving soap with clean ingredients and moisturizing oils like Dr. Bronner’s Organic Shaving Soap.
When you exit the shower, gently pat the area dry, instead of wiping
saturate witch hazel on a cotton swab and apply to the shaved area. do this the day of and the morning after. Unscented, alcohol free witch hazel ; like this one.
The ultimate fix?! Stop shaving (GASP, I know!). Come in for a complimentary laser consult! Laser hair reduction is a bit of an investment up front but OH SO WORTH IT in the end. Is much gentler on your skin and can even help with the aging and look of the skin ‘down there.’ We take care of skin. It’s what we do! Book here!
